Birgit Vanderbeke’s The Mussel Feast is a classic in the author’s native Germany, mischelessen it was published to critical and popular acclaim in What emerges is a rather startling portrait of muscchelessen tyrannical man, whose idealised version of what constitutes a family and family life can never reach his unrealistic expectations. On actually looking at Peirene Press’ website for the first time – in the run up to the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize I wanted to find out more about vanderrbeke recent titles – I saw Many of the UK book blogs I read love certain boutique presses, though until now I’d viewed these publishers as a bit too precious.
